When Doc got back to sickbay, Petty Officer Cheryl Thompson sat on the bench outside the door. The pear-shaped blonde rested her face in her hands.

“Can I help you?”

Lifting her head, she said, “I think I have the flu. I’ve been throwing up all day and I feel pretty crappy.”

“How long have you had these symptoms?”

She slowly stood. For a moment, Doc wondered if her large breasts would weigh her down. “It started yesterday with nausea but the throwing up started this morning.”

“Any diarrhea?”

“No, just puking my brains out.”

He reached to his hip and pulled a ring of keys on a retractable wire attached to his belt and opened the door. “Why did you wait so long to come and see me?” He opened the door, stepped inside and turned on the lights.

“I just got off watch. I didn’t want someone else to have to stand in for me so I just sucked it up.”

He led her past white cabinets lined along the bulkheads that contained an assortment of medical supplies needed for a six-month deployment. They stopped at a small observation table with a medical bed located next to it in the back corner of the room. “Have a seat and let’s get you checked out.”

Cheryl covered her mouth and sprinted to the sink located next to the table. She bent over and puked in the sink. “Sorry Doc.” Specs of green vomit remained on her chin.

“No need to apologize.”

She turned the cold water on and wiped her face clean.

Doc handed her a napkin.

“Thanks.” She wiped her face.

Cheryl tossed the tissue in the wastebasket then walked over and got onto the table. He took her vitals and drew some blood. “I’ll get this analyzed and get back with you.” He removed a pill bottle from one of the white cabinets mounted to the bulkhead. He pulled a drawer open and took out a small plastic bag. He placed several pills into the bag and handed it to her. “For now, take some of these for the nausea. They will keep you from throwing up.”

Cheryl took the bag and placed them in a pocket.

“Have you missed any of your periods?”

“No,” she said immediately. “I take birth control.”

“Just asking. Often the simplest explanation is the answer.”

Cheryl nodded and left for her berthing to get some rest.

She was meeting someone later.
